Kev KellyMontague Island off Narooma put on a great show in March. Greg Dunn, Natalie Preferment, my brother Brendan from Adelaide and I spent the long weekend getting in some terrific dives in excellent visibility and conditions. We'd had our fingers crossed on the long trip up because the forecast wasn't favourable, but the sea was like glass on Saturday as we headed out on the 'Dallas'. The usual cast of seals turned up to zoom around us as we splashed in on the western side of the island and over two dives we saw bull rays, wobbegongs and Port Jackson sharks. Brendan found a weight belt that someone had dropped into the kelp.
The next day the sea had churned up a bit and the sky was overcast but conditions were still divable and we explored the Keyhole area. Brendan had my camera and he stopped to take a photo when I saw a bull ray swimming towards him from behind. I signalled frantically but by the time he'd swung around the ray had done a left turn and disappeared.
Monday, conditions had improved again with the bar as flat as the rest of the sea. We went to the 'Dark Side', a bay on the northern end where we'd seen Grey Nurse sharks before. Great visibility showed us the impressive rock formations and swim throughs in this area and within a short time we spotted a bull ray, an eagle ray, a wobbegong and, finally, dimly, with Greg yelling his head off to get our attention, a Grey Nurse shark. A great weekend of diving. |
