Story by Carol Crewe.

It was a cold and windy day – just as you would expect for war. The two teams assembled with their armor and guns, eager to start the battle. First each team needed to select their captain. The red team had an easy decision. In their group was a member with military experience, natural authority and secret super ninja powers. I was the obvious choice to lead ‘Carol’s Commandos’ into war.

The nothings had a harder decision with no obvious leader amongst their number. They nominated Rob, a choice based on sympathy for a weaker party it seemed. With no experience, limited ability with a gun and an obvious lack of confidence, Rob was in for a hard time leading ‘Rob’s Rambos’.

In the first round, I took charge with a brilliant plan to lull the Rambos into a false sense of security. We let them take the flag while we assessed their members for ability and danger. It was obvious they lacked leadership and were no match for the superior red team.

In the second round the Commandos formed a strategy that resulted in a swift and decisive victory by sending David ‘Flash’ Jansen and Tom ‘Fearless’ Robinson to seize the flag. The runners were ably supported by the firepower of Peter ‘Sharp Shooter’ Skeels, Adam ‘Hawkeye’ Hawksworth and Zac ‘Courageous’ Crewe. The remainder of the team also assisted by valiantly providing diversions for the runners.

Capturing the flag quickly, we maintained our advantage until the battle was over. This scenario was repeated in the next two games also, demonstrating the superior teamwork and ability of the Commandos.

My natural leadership and battle experience was evident when we paused to reload and I was able to sustain the troops with ‘rations’. Several of the Rambos turned traitor in order to obtain a nutritional reward and spoke of their disappointment in their leader who was unprepared in this way.

In the remaining battles the Rambos tried to put the obvious lack of leadership aside but they never managed to make up for their losses in the early stages.

Overall it was a great day of warfare with the victorious Commandos going home, slightly battle weary, sporting a few bruises and with a lot of stories to tell.
